Industrial AI software is any software that applies artificial intelligence to manufacturing and industrial operations using data from machines, control systems, historians and plant systems. Its applications range from predicting equipment failures and inspecting quality to optimizing processes, reducing energy consumption, and assisting operators directly.
The term is broader than it appears, and treating it as a single product category is the most common source of confusion in evaluations. Four segments are routinely compared against each other despite solving different problems.
Industrial AI software is also distinguished from traditional automation and analytics by what it does with context. Traditional automation executes fixed logic; traditional analytics reports on what already happened. Industrial AI interprets operational context, generates explanations and recommendations, and acts through agents. A control loop needs a tag value. An AI model needs to know what the tag means, which asset it belongs to, what shift it was recorded on, and how it relates to every other signal on the line.
