An Industrial AI platform is software that enables manufacturers to build, deploy, and operate AI on operational data from plant systems — machines, control systems, historians, and MES.



The term describes two distinct layers of software that are frequently treated as one category. The application layer supplies models and use cases: vision inspection, predictive maintenance, process optimization, agentic workflows. The data layer supplies and governs the operational data those models run on, connecting it from control systems, contextualizing it with asset relationships, units, and time, and maintaining lineage so output can be traced back to its source signal. A third architecture, distinct from both, embeds AI directly into ERP and asset management workflows and operates on transactional and planning data rather than plant-floor signals.



What separates an Industrial AI platform from an Industrial IoT platform is scope rather than degree. IIoT platforms were built for connectivity, device management, and monitoring. Industrial AI additionally requires contextualization of signals into asset models, governance sufficient for model output to be traceable, and the ability to run inference where the latency budget requires it — including locally, inside the plant, in environments where data cannot leave the site.



At enterprise scale the defining requirement is repeatability across sites: standardized data models common to every plant, and centralized management of models and versions across them.
