Nissin Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is an ultra-high precision industrial machinery and parts manufacturer based in Japan with factory processes including cold and hot forging, aluminum die casting, heat treatment and assembly. The Company has seen workloads increase dramatically over the past 20 years as ISO and other industry standards require increasing data points such as production date, time, shift, number of units, equipment status, pressure and more. Historically Nissin has recorded all data manually – from asset monitoring to product quality to safety.

Nissin wanted to adopt an Industrial IoT solution to connect the factory and capture valuable machine data to satisfy industry standards and improve operations. In addition to capturing key reporting KPIs they aimed to use the data intelligence to reduce the workload on the shop floor, increase the utilization rate, generate new revenue streams and ultimately increase profits.

The customer chose Litmus Edge for its open IIoT architecture, wide range of drivers and standard visualization capabilities. With 250+ pre-built drivers, Litmus Edge drastically reduced the time and expertise Nissin needed to connect to their varied devices and sensors on the shop floor. They shared the data across the business to manage operational status and analyze underutilization factors.

Nissin IT Directior, Mr. Hiroto Yamaoka, said, “Litmus gave us the advantage of getting started very quickly. Not only did they provide a wide variety of drivers, but the solution allowed us to build an IIoT system on a standalone platform without the need to purchase other products. We completed the research phase, proof of concept, development, testing and entered production in about a year, which is a significant achievement.”

The data intelligence shared by Litmus Edge allowed Nissin to quickly identify causes of downtime and areas for improvement. As a result, they have achieved an 8% increase in uptime and a 47% reduction in defective products since adopting Litmus Edge. They have eliminated all manual data collection work and reduced overtime hours for staff, all resulting in a significant profit increase.
